Fabricate was rewarded for several luckless efforts when coming out on top for the first time since May 2015 with victory in the Squirrel Handicap at Leicester.

The four-year-old, trained by Michael Bell, was making amends for being the beaten favourite in the corresponding race last autumn with a gutsy effort.

Owned and bred by the Queen, the Makfi gelding had performed creditably this term without success, including when a never-nearer fifth in the Duke of Edinburgh Handicap at Royal Ascot.

He had no luck in the Mallard Handicap at Doncaster on his latest start, when he lost a shoe and then all chance when hampered over a furlong out.

However, his fortunes finally turned for the better in a tightly-knit contest.

Noble Gift and Stars Over The Sea cut out most of the running until the race hotted up in the straight where the 5-2 favourite Monotype was pulled up straight after struggling from some way out.
