Rafael Nadal was in imperious form as he comfortably saw off Paolo Lorenzi to make the perfect start to his China Open campaign on Tuesday.
The Spaniard, second seed for the tournament in Beijing, won the event back in 2005 and needs a good run to secure his spot at the end-of-season ATP World Tour Finals in London.
And he did not hang around, dismantling his opponent 6-1, 6-1, in just over an hour.
In the women’s draw, Petra Kvitova defeated home favourite Wang Yafan in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, to move through to the third round.
Kvitova, the tournament’s 14th seed, will next face defending champion Garbine Muguruza, who beat Yulia Putintseva in two sets on Monday.
