Castellanos’ halfway winner breaks Cameroon’s hearts

Deyna Castellanos scored an incredible last-gasp winner direct from centre as Venezuela recorded their first win at Jordan 2016 with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Cameroon.
Almost all the excitement in a largely drab game came in the final moments of stoppage time, with the Cameroonians equalising on 93 minutes before the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2014 top scorer completed her brace directly from the restart. Castellanos had already scored one superb goal by this point, but all everyone will be talking about this evening is her amazing winner from the halfway line. Cameroon, for their part, remain in contention for a place in the knockout phase – only a draw in Group B’s later match between Germany and Canada can eliminate them at this stage* – but they were generally second-best in a match dominated by the two sides’ defences.
