Godolphin denied Ponte treble
- Updated: October 3, 2016
Trainer Charlie Appleby and jockey William Buick maintained their decent strike-rates at Pontefract with a double through Hamada and Blair House.
Neither are very frequent visitors to the West Yorkshire track but make it pay when they do and they backed up their Prix Marcel Boussac triumph with Wuheida at Chantilly 24 hours earlier.
Things could have been even better as their two other runners finished second.
It was still a good day for the Godolphin team, headed by Blair House, who came with a sweeping run on the outside to lift the feature Tradeway Shipping Peter Kirkham Retiring Handicap.
The Pivotal colt, wearing blinkers for the first time, had plenty to do turning for home, but the 9/4 favourite picked up in great style to score by three-quarters of a length from Rainbow Rebel.
“We popped the blinkers on and he saw the trip out well. I think he’ll get further in time,” said Appleby.
“We sent him up for the decent ground and the stiff finish helped.”
He added: “I think he’ll appreciate cut in the ground. We’ll see what the handicapper does to him next Tuesday and see what options we’ve got for the final months of the season.”
