Thor obvious choice to start Wild Card Game

PHILADELPHIA — Because their job is to consider every option, Mets coaches debated, briefly, lining up Bartolo Colon to start the National League Wild Card Game against the Giants. The 43-year-old has been sturdy and consistent all season, and his experience would have served them well in Wednesday’s win-or-go-home game.

Then manager Terry Collins noted that Noah Syndergaard has a growing reserve of big-game experience, too. It was Syndergaard who earned the Mets’ only World Series win in 2016, Syndergaard who electrified them during a relief appearance in Game 5 of the NL Division Series. Statistically the Mets’ best pitcher all season, Syndergaard was also their most obvious option for the first Wild Card Game in franchise history.

“It’s like every little kid’s dream come true to pitch in the high-stakes game,” Syndergaard said. “So I’ll embrace it. I look forward to it. It’s going to be a lot of fun.”
