USMNT Watch: Ream Scores in Rare Start and Altidore Stays Hot
- Updated: October 2, 2016
A member of the United States men’s national team experienced two rarities on Saturday, one of which is an unfortunate sign for his prospects of making the next 23-man roster.
Fulham center-back Tim Ream started for just the third time this season, against Queens Park Rangers, but he made the most of it, as he struck the back of the net.
The forwards in the USMNT talent pool were also active in front of the net, including Jozy Altidore, who can’t be stopped at the moment for Toronto FC.
We’ll have news on those stories and more below in our latest USMNT Watch.
Tim Ream Scores 1st Club Goal Since 2010
Ream provided Fulham with a welcome equalizer in the 48th minute at Craven Cottage on Saturday, However, it would not be enough by the time the final whistle blew, as QPR won the match 2-1.
The tally from the 28-year-old was his first at the club level since September 11, 2010, when he was a member of the New York Red Bulls in Major League Soccer.
The only other goal in Ream’s professional career came for the USMNT in this year’s friendly win over Puerto Rico.
If the versatile Ream, who can play across the back line, begins to get more playing time in the Championship, he has potential to return to the USMNT setup.
Jonathan Spector played 90 minutes at right-back for Birmingham City in their 1-0 win over Blackburn Rovers on Saturday. The Blues are sixth in the Championship with 20 points.
Danny Williams went the full 90 for Reading in their 1-1 draw with Derby County. The Royals are eighth heading into the latest international break.
Eric Lichaj was on the wrong end of the final score on Saturday, as Nottingham Forest fell 2-1 to Bristol City. Forest are in 18th place with 12 points.
DeAndre Yedlin was an unused substitute for third-place Newcastle United for their win over Rotherham United.
Up in the Premier League, Lynden Gooch entered Sunderland’s draw against West Bromwich Albion in second-half stoppage time.
Brad Guzan was once again left on the bench by Middlesbrough, while Emerson Hyndman failed to make Bournemouth’s matchday squad.
