Postseason seeds and tiebreakers explained
- Updated: October 1, 2016
As the 2016 season winds down, the six division winners have been decided. However, the two Wild Card races are up in the air, and there is a good chance we end up seeing at least one tiebreaker game played on Monday, Oct. 3. And home-field advantage is still in play in several races.
Any regular-season games previously canceled by weather will be played if the outcome would impact postseason berths or home-field advantage. Thursday’s Indians-Tigers game, which was called due to rain, will be played Monday at 1 ET if the game impacts Cleveland’s race with the Red Sox for home field in the ALDS.

What we know about the Division races The Rangers have clinched home-field advantage through the World Series. They will play the AL Wild Card winner in the ALDS.
The Red Sox will play the Indians in the ALDS. Home-field advantage is still to be determined. If Boston and Cleveland finish tied, the Red Sox will get it because of a better head-to-head record.
The Cubs have clinched home-field advantage through the NLCS. They will play the NL Wild Card winner in the NLDS.
The Nationals will play the Dodgers in the NLDS. Home-field advantage is still to be determined. If Washington and Los Angeles finish tied, the Dodgers will get it because of a better head-to-head record.
Two teams tie for both Wild Card spots If there is a two-team tie for the two Wild Card spots they do not play a tiebreaker game to decide home-field advantage. Instead, it is decided based on head-to-head record, followed by intradivsion record. If that doesn’t settle it, it then goes to intraleague record.
NATIONAL LEAGUE *Cardinals: They hold the tiebreaker over the Giants by virtue of winning their season series 4-3, and though they split the season series, the Cards have a better record against the NL Central than the Mets do against the NL East, and, in the event of a tie in intradivisional records, would hold the next tiebreaker by virtue of their superior record vs. NL teams.
The Cards and Mets both have season-series edges over the Giants, and the Cards and Mets split their game, so first choice would go to the club with the better intradivision record, which is the Cardinals as of now.
*Mets: They hold the tiebreaker over the Giants by virtue of winning the season series 4-3.
*Giants: Both the Mets and Cardinals hold the tiebreaker over the Giants, which means the Giants would play on the road in the Wild …
