CINCINNATI — In Friday’s series opener between the Cubs and Reds at Great American Ball Park, the Cubs came out swinging.

Reds spot starter Josh Smith mowed through the first four innings, carrying a perfect game on 42 pitches with 10 flyouts. However, that aggressive approach paid off for the Cubs, with two runs on three hits the next two innings off Smith helping to propel Chicago to a 7-3 win.

Ben Zobrist notched the Cubs’ first hit and run with one swing in the fifth, launching his 16th homer into the right-field bleachers. The Cubs added on in the sixth, loading the bases off Smith before he recorded an out and ending up with a run. They added another in the seventh off reliever Tony Cingrani with two doubles.
