Grigg omitted from NI squad

Will Grigg will not feature in Northern Ireland’s World Cup European Qualifiers against San Marino and Germany after asking to sit out the games for personal reasons.
The Wigan striker has recently had a child with his partner and that is understood to be the reason behind his request.
The 25-year-old, who became a cult hero at Euro 2016 due to the Green and White Army’s infectious ‘Will Grigg’s On Fire’ chant, despite the fact he did not play a minute, has been in good form this season with six goals in 11 appearances for the Latics.
“Will Grigg has asked to not be in the squad due to a family situation which I’m not going to go into. It’s his decision,” said O’Neill.
“It’s a blow for Will. He’s been on the scoresheet but I had a good chat with him and he didn’t feel being here was right.”
Grigg was left out of the starting XI by Wigan boss Gary Caldwell against Wolves in midweek and, although he came off the bench and netted in a 2-1 win, his manager said: “I just felt Will looked a little bit jaded in the last few games, he didn’t look his normal sharp self.
