Lithuania – LKL Round 3: Lietuvos Rytas rally past Lietkabelis

David Logan Round 3 means everything may happen in LKL as the season just started. The biggest surprise of round 3 in LKL took place in Vilnius where host Lietuvos rytas (3-0) edged Lietkabelis (2-1) 68-66 on Wednesday evening. Lietkabelis was trailing by 6 points at halftime but managed to get 1-point lead after three quarters before a 17-14 charge of Lietuvos rytas, which allowed them to win the game. 26 personal fouls committed by Lietkabelis helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. The best player for the winners was American-Polish guard David Logan (185-82, college: Indianapolis) who scored 22 points and 5 assists. Forward Deividas Gailius (200-88) chipped in 21 points and 7 rebounds. At the other side the best for losing team was power forward Simas Galdikas (204-87) who recorded 16 points, 5 rebounds and 5 blocks (on 7-of-8 shooting from the field). Lietkabelis’ coach Kazys Maksvytis rotated ten players in this game, but that didn’t help. Lietkabelis will play next round against Juventus trying to make it back to the top of the standings. Lietuvos rytas will try to continue on its current victory against Dzukija in Alytus. Vytautas (2-1) recorded a loss in Kedainiai. Visitors were defeated by Nevezis (1-2) 80-68. It was a good game for Croatia guard Toni Prostran (182-91) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 20 points and 11 assists. Karolis Petrukonis contributed with 17 points and 9 rebounds (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field) for the winners. Center Mindaugas Kupsas (217-91, agency: Octagon Europe) answered with 17 points and 5 rebounds for Vytautas. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Nevezis will play against Neptunas (#9) in Klaipeda in the next round. Vytautas will play on the road against Zalgiris (#4) in Kaunas and it may be a tough game between close rivals. The game in Siauliai supposed to be also quite interesting. Zalgiris (2-1) played at the court of Siauliai (0-2). Zalgiris smashed Siauliai 98-45 on Wednesday. It was a great evening for Edgaras Ulanovas who led his team to a victory scoring 14 points and 4 assists. Zalgiris’ coach Sarunas Jasikevicius felt very confident that he used 10 players and allowed the starting five to rest. The best for the losing side was Asenso Ampim with 6 points and 9 rebounds. Zalgiris will meet at home Vytautas (#3) in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Siauliai will play against P.Zvaigzdes (#8) in Pasvalys and hopes to get finally their first victory.We should mention about the upset which took place in Klaipeda, where Neptunas (0-2) lost at home to P.Zvaigzdes (1-2) 55-61. It was an exceptional evening for Osvaldas Olisevicius who led the winners and scored 17 points and 9 rebounds. Neptunas’ coach Dainius Adomaitis tested ten players, but that didn’t help to avoid defeat in this game. P.Zvaigzdes’ next round opponent will be Siauliai (#10) at home.
