Williams’ boldness in final weekend of ’41 paid off

Seventy-five years ago, Ted Williams entered the final weekend of the 1941 regular season hitting .401.
It had already been a fine season for The Splendid Splinter. Beyond his average, he led the Majors in home runs with 37, as well as on-base percentage, slugging percentage and runs scored.
The Red Sox wanted Williams to sit out their last three games, ensuring he would finish the season above .400. But Williams, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1966, refused.
