Matz sees doctor; season most likely over

MIAMI — For at least the fourth time since reporting discomfort in his left shoulder in mid-August, Mets left-hander Steven Matz visited a doctor in Manhattan on Monday for a checkup. Though Mets staff members in Miami did not know details of his visit as of Monday afternoon, they did indicate that Matz’s stalled progress means he almost certainly will not return this season.
Because Matz has not pitched since Aug. 14, he will not be a consideration for the Mets’ postseason rotation. Even if Matz does feel healthy enough to throw off a mound in the coming weeks, manager Terry Collins said it is unlikely he would contribute out of the bullpen, either.
