Temba Bavuma because the second South African after Colin Ingram to score a century on ODI debut and together with half-centuries from three of his team-mates piled on the against a hapless Ireland attack on a flat Willowmoore Park pitch. Bavuma, opening in place of Hashim Amla who is awaiting the birth of his third child, shared in the highest opening stand in Benoni with Quinton de Kock to set South Africa up for a total that seemed headed towards 400.
Ireland stalled South Africa briefly and George Dockrell and Tim Murtagh conceded at under six runs to the over but they could not stem the run flow sufficiently, especially at the end of the innings. JP Duminy and Farhaan Behardien shared in an 87-run stand off 6.4 overs to get South Africa over 350 and make Ireland rue their ill-discipline. Craig Young and Peter Chase were too generous in their lengths while Ireland’s fielding included several drops and was disappointingly lacking in energy.
Most frustratingly for them was the first opportunity squandered and it could have chanced the complexion of the innings. Bavuma should have been dismissed in the second over when he drove carelessly at a Chase delivery and presented a healthy edge to second slip. Kevin O’Brien was stationed there but could not hold on.
