A’s hoping Gray returns before season’s end

OAKLAND — A’s right-hander Sonny Gray faced hitters Saturday, taking the next step in what he hopes will be his return to the mound before the season concludes.
Gray, who hasn’t appeared in a game since Aug. 6 because of muscle strain and inflammation in his forearm, threw about 50 pitches before Oakland’s game against the Rangers, including one simulated inning.
“I threw everything I had and wasn’t holding back. It felt really good,” said Gray.
A’s manager Bob Melvin echoed Gray’s comments, adding that the club will make a decision on if Gray will return depending on how he feels Sunday. It is still yet to be determined if Gray …
