Preston earn derby spoils

An early goal from Jordan Hugill was enough for Preston to secure a 1-0 victory over Wigan in a Lancashire derby at Deepdale.
Hugill gave the hosts the lead in the seventh minute as he inadvertently deflected Aiden McGeady’s strike past Wigan ‘keeper Adam Bogdan.
Wigan dominated possession from start to finish, but created very few chances for Will Grigg to find that elusive equaliser.
The three points moves the Lilywhites up to 18th, while Wigan, who have lost five in a row on the road, remain in the bottom three.
It was a third game in seven days for Preston, but it did not show as they flew out of the blocks and deservedly led after seven minutes as McGeady’s shot from 20 yards was deflected in off Hugill – the striker claiming the goal.
