Holliday impresses in live BP session

CHICAGO — Standing in the same batters’ box where he took a Mike Montgomery pitch off his right thumb six weeks ago, Matt Holliday tested that surgically repaired thumb during live batting practice on Friday.
Holliday faced teammate Mike Mayers for about 15 minutes during the morning session, which was watched closely by manager Mike Matheny and hitting coach John Mabry from their perch behind the cage. Holliday drove pitches deep to all parts of the field, swung and missed at a few and fouled off several more. One particular pitch Holliday hit off the end of the bat briefly aggravated his thumb, but after stepping out of the box to regroup for a few seconds, he continued the session …
