Just when India seemed to have made the perfect start to their 500th Test, winning the toss and moving smoothly to 154 for 1, New Zealand hit back with three wickets in less than 10 overs. At tea, India were a shaky 185 for 4.
Coming off scores of 166 and 256* in the Duleep Trophy, Cheteshwar Pujara had batted with positive footwork against the spinners, stepping out to the pitch or rocking right back, and moved to 62 off108 balls when he spooned a drive straight back to Mitchell Santner.
