Lunch India 105 for 1 (Vijay 39*, Pujara 34*) v New ZealandLive scorecard and ball-by-ball details
India made a solid start to their 500th Test, losing only one wicket in a busy first session after choosing to bat first. With a cracked Green Park pitch expected to provide increasing assistance to spinners as the match progresses, a lunch-time total of 105 for 1 represented a solid base for India to push on from in pursuit of a big first-innings total.
Each member of India’s top three got among the runs, with KL Rahul dismissed for an aggressive 32 before M Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara added an unbroken 63 for the second wicket.
Coming off scores of 166 and 256* in the Duleep Trophy, Pujara batted with positive footwork against New Zealand’s trio of spinners, stepping out to the pitch of the ball or going right back. Vijay was more sedate, ignoring Neil Wagner’s short balls early on, and solid against the spinners aside from a couple of indecisive moments against Mark Craig’s away-drift.
