Volquez breaks out of funk with strong start

CLEVELAND — Royals right-hander Edinson Volquez finally delivered like the Volquez of 2015, delivering his best performance in roughly two months as he held the Indians to one run and four hits through 6 2/3 innings in the Royals’ 2-1 loss on Tuesday night at Progressive Field.
It was Volquez’s best outing since July 24, when he gave up one run over six innings against Texas. He had a 7.46 ERA over his last 10 outings.
But Volquez found his command early on Tuesday.
“My secondary pitches were working tonight,” Volquez said. “I never really got behind in the count, and I got ahead in the count on breaking balls. It was good to keep guys off the bases.”
Royals manager Ned Yost has been waiting for a Volquez performance like this for a while, too.
