By The Numbers highlighted the Red Wings on-ice accomplishments during the 2015-16 season. Each week during the off-season, By The Numbers profiled a different player on the team, focusing on their statistical highs. In this final week we focus on captain Henrik Zetterberg.
In some respects, the 2015-16 was a very good one for Zetterberg, who managed to play in all 82 games just two years after undergoing back surgery. But Zetterberg, who has generally been close to a point-per-game player (.911 points per game played) in his career, was not as productive, with 13 goals, 37 assists and a career-worst minus-15 rating.
“I’m happy I was able to play all 82,” Zetterberg said the day the Wings cleaned out their lockers in April. “That’s my goal every year to be able to play all games. If it took a toll on me I’m not sure. I should have performed better than I did. I don’t think it had anything to do with playing 82 games or not.”
Just as Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk eventually took the burden off of Steve Yzerman, Brendan Shanahan and other veteran players, the Wings will need someone to take some responsibilities off of Zetterberg’s shoulders.
