Gray sets Rockies record with 16-K shutout

DENVER — The punch-outs came in record-setting bunches for Rockies rookie Jon Gray, who achieved a club single-game record 16 strikeouts in his first career shutout and complete game — an 8-0 victory over the Padres on Saturday night.
The right-hander surpassed Darryl Kile’s 14 strikeouts, achieved Aug. 29, 1998, at Montreal. Gray, 24, whose previous high was 12 on June 5 at San Diego, dominated the game with a slider he used for 12 third strikes. Along the way, Gray set a club mark by striking out six straight in the second and third innings. The previous club record, five, was accomplished 10 times — the latest by Jason Marquis against the D-backs on Sept.18, 2009. Gray also had the unusual feat of fanning four in an inning in the second.
