Warwickshire took a mighty advantage at midway in the Royal London Cup final as they dismissed Surrey for 136 at Lord’s. It was a wholesale collapse for Surrey, who lost their last eight wickets for 37 in 15.2 overs, their innings coming to grief with almost 10 overs unused.
Surrey, outdone by Gloucestershire in the final a year ago, will have feared at halfway that this time a more overwhelming defeat was on the cards – although their bowlers knew they had something to work with on a used Lord’s pitch that encouraged the seam bowlers and also turned progressively for Jeetan Patel.
The story of the September one-day final has long been one of grim, grey skies and naggy surfaces. All the more surprising perhaps that Surrey’s captain, Gareth Batty, chose to bat after winning the toss. At 99 for 2, his decision could be defended. As the innings progressed, Oliver Hannon-Dalby, in particular, made it seam and Patel again proclaimed himself the best spin bowler in the county game.
