Holliday to test thumb with simulated game

SAN FRANCISCO — Matt Holliday is scheduled to face live pitching during a Saturday afternoon simulated game that will give the Cardinals left fielder a better indication of whether his surgically repaired right thumb is strong enough for him to make a late-season return.
Six days after a Mike Montgomery pitch fractured his thumb, Holliday had it stabilized with a screw. Doctors told Holliday that would offer him the best chance at playing again this season. He has been dealing with soreness since resuming batting practice with the team earlier this week and is now eager to see how the thumb responds to this next test.
“You see the velocity, and I’m sure the contact of hitting a 90 mph fastball will give me a better feel of what that will feel like if I do get jammed or if that’s going to be something that causes me soreness or swelling,” Holliday said. “I’d love to play, but I can’t do it by jeopardizing my finger or putting it in a bad situation. I have soreness. It’s clearly not 100 percent.”
