Boxing Breakdown: Canelo Alavrez vs. Liam Smith preview
- Updated: September 16, 2016
Saturday night, HBO is back on PPV with Canelo Alvarez (47-1-1; 33 KO) vs. Liam Smith (23-0-1; 13 KO) in a 12 round Junior Middleweight (154 lb.) title fight. Ring Magazine lists Smith as #8 in the division; Canelo has been fighting up a weight class, so is unranked here, but is #8 pound for pound. HBO PPV Boxing Canelo vs. Smith airs live this Saturday, September 17 on PPV with a fight time of 9:00 p.m. ET / 6:00 p.m. PT.
This is not a fight that is making anyone happy. In the world of boxing match-ups, Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin has quickly taken hold as the #1 fight fans want to see. It’s a fight that just feel right, and has fans incredibly excited. But it’s not happening, and, right or wrong, the blame for it not coming together is being placed firmly at the feet of Canelo and his team. The fact that in GGG’s place Canelo is taking on the overmatched Liam Smith is not making anyone feel better about the situation.
