Alvarez set to undergo 2nd shoulder surgery

KANSAS CITY — Right-hander Henderson Alvarez will undergo a second shoulder next week, likely to end his tour with the A’s without ever throwing a pitch for the club.
Dr. James Andrews will perform an arthroscopic operation on Alvarez, and only until it’s completed will the pitcher have an understanding of how much time he’ll need to recover.
No matter, it’s fairly certain Oakland will not tender Alvarez a contract entering his final year of arbitration eligibility after signing him to a one-year deal last winter.
Andrews performed Alvarez’s first surgery in July 2015 to repair a tear in his shoulder.
