Sano returning to Minn. to have back examined

DETROIT — Twins third baseman Miguel Sano is scheduled to head back to Minnesota on Thursday night to get his ailing back examined, and he will miss the Twins’ three-game series against the Mets in New York.
Sano left Monday’s game in the seventh inning with lower back tightness on the right side, and he tried to take swings in the cage before Wednesday’s game, but it didn’t go well. The Twins are hopeful he’ll be able to return before the end of the season, but they won’t know more until he has his back examined.
“We’re hoping there’s nothing significant,” Twins manager Paul Molitor said. “We’re going to get him checked out by our people and then get him in a situation where we can get him some isolated treatment with our rehab trainers back there over the weekend and see if he responds and gets back to action when we get back for the homestand.”
Sano said he woke up with back pain about 10 days ago and that it progressively got worse. He said it also hasn’t felt any better since he left Monday’s game.
