The Kansas City Chiefs have already given up on 2016 third-round selection KeiVarae Russell, waiving the cornerback Wednesday morning.
The Chiefs announced the roster move, which also included the signing of linebacker Dezman Moses, on their official Twitter feed.
It’s unusual to see a player drafted so high be let go just one week into his rookie season. But Russell struggled to stand out during training camp and the preseason, which prevented him from climbing the Chiefs depth chart.
In turn, he was among the inactives when Kansas City opened the regular season with a thrilling 33-27 comeback victory over the San Diego Chargers on Sunday.
