By The Numbers will highlight the Red Wings on-ice accomplishments in the 2015-16 season. Each week during the off-season, By The Numbers will profile a different player on the team, focusing on their statistical highs. This week we focus on defenseman Alexey Marchenko.
It was a growing experience for Marchenko, who played in 75 total regular-season and playoff games with the Red Wings and their AHL affiliate in Grand Rapids last season.
The 24-year-old Russian defenseman then returned home where he represented his country and won a bronze medal in the World Championship in May.
Marchenko was solid for the Russians, playing to his strengths, which are to be a steady influence in the defensive zone and transition pucks up to the forwards. Those strengths were definitely on display for Russia, which defeated the U.S. 7-2 in the bronze-medal game.
It’s expected that Marchenko will be on the opening-night roster when the Red Wings begin the 2016-17 NHL season. But like most players, he has things he still needs to work on …
