HBO Boxing results: Brook’s corner throws in the towel, Golovkin wins by 5th round TKO

Gennady Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs) handed Kell Brook (36-1, 25 KOs) his first professional defeat, but the middleweight champion’s title defense was anything but easy against the IBF welterweight champion. Golovkin ate several crisp, hard shots from Brook, had trouble at times finding his rhythm, but ultimately was too powerful and strong for Brook and forced Brook’s corner to throw in the towel (much to the surprise and/or disappointment of many watching it live).
This was a thrilling contest from start to finish, with Golovkin by his own admission not performing up to his usual high standards. He still had Brook in serious trouble in the 1st round, drilling him with a left hook to the body and then upstairs and making the Brit wobble. Brook retaliated and caught Golovkin with good, hard, clean punches in the middle of the ring that had Golovkin backing up.
It was a high-action, brutally paced contest, and Brook was getting the better of GGG in the 2nd round. The 3rd round saw Golovkin come out super aggressively and once again had Brook retreating with vicious body shots, and his right eye was also borhtersome. His …
