Opting to bat first on a dry and cracked Greater Noida surface, Gautam Gambhir set about justifying his decision with a composed 94 that put India Blue in a position of strength against an India Red attack that lacked penetration.
Gambhir, who registered his fourth consecutive fifty-plus score of the tournament, also brought up his fourth consecutive century opening stand with Mayank Agarwal. Agarwal, in fine form himself, scored 57 in a knock laced with fluent cover drives. After Agarwal’s dismissal, Cheteshwar Pujara came in and ensured continuity in the batting side’s dominance and the bowling side’s largely fruitless toil.
If winning the toss was a slice of luck, Gambhir and Agarwal benefited from a few more fortunate moments over the course of an otherwise straightforward first session. Agarwal’s first boundary was a streaky, uppish drive to the right of gully. Gambhir, looking to stamp his authority on legspinner Amit Mishra early in the eighth over, miscued a loft which landed beyond the reach of a backpedalling mid-on.
