With Duffy out, Rays sign shortstop Ramirez

A day after the Rays announced Matt Duffy will require season-ending Achilles surgery, the team signed free-agent shortstop Alexi Ramirez to provide up-the-middle depth.
Ramirez, who was released Sunday by the Padres, hit .240/.275/.330 with five home runs and 41 RBIs this season for San Diego. He spent the previous eight seasons with the Chicago White Sox, hitting .273/.310/.399 with 109 home runs and 542 …
