Serena Williams has passed all of her tests as she prepares to play her quarterfinal match Wednesday night. However, she should get her biggest test of the U.S. Open when she steps on the court at Arthur Ashe Stadium at 7 p.m. to face Simona Halep.
Williams, of course, is the No. 1 seed in the women’s tournament. Even though she came into the national championship with shoulder issues, she has been serving better in each of her four matches, and there is no reason to think she won’t be at her best against Halep.
However, the fifth-seeded Romanian has been playing spectacular tennis herself to this point in the tournament.
She has run over four straight opponents, including a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Carla Suarez-Navarro in the fourth round.
Halep has lost just one set in the tournament, as she defeated Timea Babos 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 in the third round.
The victory over Babos was her most impressive of the tournament, because her opponent demonstrated significant power in taking the second set. In the past, that would have rocked Halep, but she stayed calm in the final set and got excellent depth on her ground strokes.That allowed her to regain control of the match.
