Matheny: 3rd a learning experience for Weaver

MILWAUKEE — On a night when Luke Weaver seemed to pitch with greater conviction than he had in his first three Major League starts, it was a momentary lapse against the Brewers that ultimately undid him.
An otherwise strong start from the rookie right-hander was bruised by a seven-pitch sequence in the third inning. It started when Weaver lost a hitter with a career .082 average, and then capsized with a 392-foot blast on a pitch that had otherwise been so reliable. Without enough production from the Cardinals’ offense to mask the mistake, Weaver’s blip led to a 3-1 loss that precluded a potential series sweep.
“It just shows you how fragile this is,” manager Mike Matheny said afterward. “That’s just one that’s going to haunt him a little.”
It was a slip that no one saw coming. Weaver had breezed through the Brewers’ first eight batters, retiring all — five via strikeout — on 30 pitches. Only opposing starter Matt Garza, 1-for-21 this season, stood in the way of wrapping up a clean third inning.
