Mariners expect to add 4-5 callups Friday

ARLINGTON — With September looming and his team fighting to stay in contention, Mariners manager Scott Servais said the club will likely add a handful of players to the roster on Friday, when rosters can be expanded for the final month.

“We need some more healthy bodies,” Servais said. “You’re probably looking initially at four or five guys. Then we’ll kind of see where the [Triple-A] Tacoma season plays out. They’re fighting for a playoff spot, so we’ll see where we go after that.”

All seven of the Mariners’ Minor League affiliates have qualified or are fighting for postseason berths. The Minor League seasons end Monday, but the club will let some of its young prospects finish out the playoffs before adding them as well.

“It’s good news,” Servais said. “I’m really happy with the job our Minor League system has done. The year they’ve had is phenomenal. It’s been a great turnaround there. They all should enjoy that. But you’ll probably only see four or five guys at the beginning [because of the postseason plans].”

With an off-day on Thursday, the Mariners will wait until Friday to add anyone, and they’re expected to bring up reliever Evan Scribner and catcher Jesus Sucre, as well as possibly a corner outfielder to help out defensively and another pitcher or two. David Rollins and Cody Martin, two pitchers who’ve been with Seattle several times already this year, are possibilities. Daniel Robertson is an outfielder who could fit the bill as well.
